Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Threshold team breaks new barriers with eMagazine format

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology’s

award winning Literary Magazine, Threshold, was produced for both print and electronic format this past Spring of 2013. With the guidance and direction of Jostens representative, Jason Baranowski and Threshold Senior Editor editor, Naomi Naik the team transformed the Spring 2013 printed edition of Threshold into free flowing touch screens for the iPad4.

Using InDesign CS6 and the app/plug-in, Mag+, the Threshold staff leveraged Adobe’s powerful design software to repurpose its print layouts and spur students to interact with literary magazine content. The interactive environment opens up opportunities for students (and others around the world if the app is launched globally) to engage with the artists and their work represented in the magazine.

New potential is abound in how Lit Magazine content is created and expressed in the newest mobile platforms. Thomas Jefferson’s Threshold staff is embracing it.

May 11th, 2013 marked the first annual Jostens Advisers Appreciation Day at Nationals Park in Washington DC. Jostens advisers from Northern Virginia and Montgomery County, Maryland enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate the end of the yearbook season with a day out at the ballpark. Advisers brought their friends, family and their “Natitude.” Jostens representatives Jason Baranowski and Jen Massey sponsored the event in an effort to recognize all of the hard work and effort the advisers put into producing a great yearbook for their schools. It was a well-deserved day of celebration.

The day started out threatening rain and only a light shower prevailed. It didn’t stop the tailgating in Lot W under the tent. The Nats started Strasburg, but unfortunately, he ended up getting roped by the Chicago Cubs. Despite the loss it was an All-American day for local Jostens yearbook advisers.

Westfield H.S. yearbook adviser recognized by Jostens for Virginia High School League’s Col. Charles E. Savedge Award

On December 20th, 2012, the Jostens team of Northern Virginia personally recognized Mr. Anthony Whitten, adviser of the Westfield HS yearbook (The Guardian) with a commemorative championship ring for receiving Virginia High School League’s Col. Charles E. Savedge Award.

Westfield HS Yearbook Championship Ring by JostensTo receive the Savedge Award, a school must receive five Trophy Class rankings within a seven-year period. The VHSL has recognized schools since 1995 for the Award for Sustained Excellence in Scholastic Journalism.

Jostens has been the official commemorative partner with the VHSL since 2008 and through the partnership, designs and crafts the rings allowing every adviser and coach to personalize their own ring.

Mr. Whitten also anticipates receiving the Savedge Award for The Watchdog, Westfield High School’s award winning newspaper, in which he’ll earn a second ring.

Jostens and the Virginia High School League are privileged to recognize and provide this symbol of excellence to deserving State Champion advisers and athletic coaches across the State of Virginia each year.

Paul VI Awarded Gold Medalist by CSPA

Paul VI High School of Fairfax, VA was recently recognized for excellence in journalism by the CSPA (Columbia Scholastic Press Association). The IMPRINTS yearbooks staff, advised by Eileen Kiley, received Gold Medalist honors for the 2012 publication.  Congratulations to The IMPRINTS yearbook staff for its creative and consistent development of the “You Had to Be There” theme, that in retrospective, captured the one of a kind year perfectly.

Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School discovers first place at NSPA

The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School yearbook, Dimensions, was named a First Class publication by the National Scholastic Press Association. NSPA especially highlighted the staff’s work in highlighting the school Jewish heritage in the 2012 edition. Congratulations to the Dimensions staff, including Claire Burke, first year adviser who helped get the Dimensions staff reach their goals.

McLean High School Yearbook staff members receive Honorable Mention in Jostens/Adobe InDesign Contest

Jason Baranowski and Jen Massey, local representatives for Jostens in Northern Virginia, congratulate two of McLean High School’s yearbook staff members Melanie Ta and Cedric Whitney for receiving Honorable Mention in the 2012 Jostens Desktop Publishing Contest. The annual contest is co-sponsored by Jostens and Adobe.

The layouts produced for McLean High School’s 2012 yearbook (The Clan, sponsored by Meghan Percival) were selected out of 350 entries from across the country.  Contest judges include former and current yearbook advisers, industry instructors and professionals, as well as Jostens Yearbook experts.

The winning designs will be featured in the 2013 Gotcha Covered Look Book and will also be featured on Jostens and Adobe websites.
